About the fellow holding the pen
A late-blooming author with a long-running curiosity problem.
After a career in business, teaching, and real estate, John D Hatch finally found a profession where making things up is considered a core competency.
I’m John D Hatch. I live in Aiken, South Carolina, with my wife, Ann, and a small dog who maintains exacting editorial standards—mostly concerning walk schedules.
Before writing fiction, I earned an MBA, worked in marketing, taught college, invested in real estate, and accumulated several decades’ worth of opinions about money, technology, and human behavior. Eventually those opinions began arranging themselves into books.
My stories tend to start with a peculiar question: What if a person could be copied? What if reality had reruns? What happens when the machinery becomes intelligent but the people remain gloriously, stubbornly human?
What I’m after
I like speculative ideas, but I care most about the people caught inside them. The machinery can be dazzling; the imperfect life is the point. I try to write quickly, clearly, and with enough humor to keep the philosophy from requiring protective eyewear.
